Event Report: Tony collected the trailer and 7 kayaks, paddles and jackets from Murray River Canoe Hire late Fri arvo and arrived about 7pm at Gary and Shirley's place. A quick camp setup ensued (thanks to Garys cordless drill) - tech screws make awesome tent pegs in seriously hard and dry ground. A very pleasant evening was spent over dinner in the house with our hosts and fellow member Des.
Paddlers arrived en masse sat morning and after the massive organisation that always precedes paddling events 11 paddlers all in single kayaks headed off about 10am.
Paddling Warby Ovens National Park
It was very hot - perfect conditions for getting up close and personal with the Ovens River - the dog enjoyed her occasional bale outs from Tony's kayak
Miffy
Pity the GPS map Tony was using to navigate with didnt show fallen trees across channels we chose to navigate
Ovens River limbo
By the time we go to have lunch at Goblet Reserve at Boohrman north the paddlers all chose to cool off in the river - for quite sometime!
It was hot!
We then returned via a similar route with variations - guided by the excellent map on Tony's GPS - no limbo required on the return leg
By the time we returned to Toscana we had notched up 14km over 6 hours - a fantastic days work!
Back at Toscana our hosts property on the Ovens River
Some refreshments were in order!
A great evening of chatting and Kris Kringle present giving then took place.
Next morning we organised to leave Tonys car and trailer and Garys car at the wharf in Bundalong - and we set out to explore the Ovens river north of the bridge at Esmond
Weve done this paddle 3 or 4 times now and it is a fabulous route - downstream on the Ovens
Miffy directing traffic
Then south east upstream on the Ovens (this was hard work) to a bridge
The bridge on the Ovens
The bridge on the Ovens
Then downstream (although it didnt feel like it!) on yet another channel of the Ovens - followed by a "river bush bash" through phragmites - tall reed like native water plants. No speed boats to avoid in here - just majestic pristine wetlands populated by birds and aquatic species.
The dog doesnt want to know about whats ahead
Jan made it through the challenging section of the paddle first
Beautiful lagoon
Eventually we all made it through!
Approaching the Murray River
Not surprisingly the water birds such as Pelicans and Swans were in profusion
Pelican
As is our tradition lunch was had at the beautiful channel that leads through to the Murray River
Lunch spot on a channel that runs into the Murray
A 1 hour paddle down the Murray brought us back to the Bundalong wharf where the cars were stashed
In the home straight!
Homeward bound
