Great Ocean Walk, Grade 4, 104 km 7 site backpacking.

Hi all

This Iconic walk starts at Apollo Bay and ends at the Twelve Apostles Info centre , west of Prince town.

There are 7 GOW camps, each camp has 8 sites with composting toilets, a small shelter with table etc and 2 untreated water tanks

Each campsite is approximately 3.5 x 3.5 metres and will fit: 1: 1 x 3 man tent 2. 2 x 1 man tent 3. 1x1 man tent & 1 x small 2 man tent.

Each site costs $32.80 per camp ground - times 7  $229.60  to share with ?? on your site.

Booking is essential, I am going to book one site 

I am asking that each walker books their own site with a partner to share with. Starting on 22nd March 2019 from Apolo Bay

Getting there..

Drive to Princetown on the Thursday, stay and leave vechicle at the Caravan park the Friday catch the Coach to Apollo Bay  , Coach leaves about 10:45 arriving at Apollo Bay about 12:15

and walk back to the car.

When I have some idea who is interested, and committed,  we can get toghether for a meet..

Elliot Ridge

Elliot Ridge hike-in campsite is located on a sheltered ridge top, nestled amongst a tall eucalypt forest. Facilities - Two untreated rainwater tanks, two composting toilets, three sided shelter with camp table and seating. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Apollo Bay Visitor Centre to Elliot Ridge campsite - 9.8km Approx time - 3hr 30min Grade - Medium Each campsite is approximately 3.5 x 3.5 metres and will fit: 1: 1 x 3 man tent 2. 2 x 1 man tent 3. 1x1 man tent & 1 x small 2 man tent.

Blanket Bay

Blanket Bay hike-in campsite is set amongst coastal woodlands, facing East across a sheltered bay, with a waterfall adjacent to the campsite. The dedicated hike-in campsite is approximately 50 metres from the car based campground. Facilities - One untreated rainwater tank, three sided shelter with camp table and seating. Toilets and untreated rainwater available in near by car based campground. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Elliot Ridge campsite to Blanket Bay campsite - 12km Approx time - 4hr 30min Grade - Easy

Cape Otway

Cape Otway hike-in campsite is located 600 metres from the Cape Otway Lighthouse precinct. This site is set amongst coastal woodlands with the Manna Gums attracting regular visits from the local koala population. Facilities - Two untreated rainwater tanks, two composting toilets, three sided shelter with camp table and seating. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Blanket Bay campsite to Cape Otway campsite - 10.5km Approx time - 3hr 45min Grade - Easy/Medium

Aire River

Aire River hike-in campsite is a sheltered site under a canopy of Beard Heath, set above the Aire River. Facilities - One untreated rainwater tank, three sided shelter with camp table and seating. Toilets are available in near by car based campground. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Cape Otway campsite to Aire River campsite - 9.6km Approx time - 3hr 15min Grade - Medium Each campsite is approximately 3.5 x 3.5 metres and will fit: 1: 1 x 3 man tent 2. 2 x 1 man tent 3. 1x1 man tent & 1 x small 2 man tent.

Johanna Beach

Johanna Beach hike-in campsite is set amongst Casuarinas and located on a ridge offering spectacular coastal views on one side and rural farm land on the other. Facilities - Two untreated rainwater tanks, composting toilet, three sided shelter with camp table and seating. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Aire River campsite to Johanna Beach campsite - 13.8km Approx time - 5hr 15min Grade - Medium Each campsite is approximately 3.5 x 3.5 metres and will fit: 1: 1 x 3 man tent 2. 2 x 1 man tent 3. 1x1 man tent & 1 x small 2 man tent.

Ryans Den

Ryans Den hike-in campsite is a remote site set amongst tall eucalypts, with spectacular ocean views, both to Cape Otway in the East and Sub Marine Rock to the West. Facilities - Two untreated rainwater tanks, one composting toilet, three sided shelter with camp table and seating. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Johanna Beach campsite to Ryans Den campsite - 13.8km Approx time - 5hr Grade - Medium/Hard Each campsite is approximately 3.5 x 3.5 metres and will fit: 1: 1 x 3 man tent 2. 2 x 1 man tent 3. 1x1 man tent & 1 x small 2 man tent.

Devils Kitchen

Devils Kitchen hike-in campsite is a remote site set amongst coastal woodland with great coastal views. Hiker feedback is that the view from the toilet is magnificent. Facilities - Two untreated rainwater tanks, one composting toilet (with a view), three sided shelter with camp table and seating. 8 individual hike-in campsites with a limit of 3 people per site. Distance from Ryans Den campsite to Devils Kitchen - 12.8km Approx time - 5hr 15min Grade - Medium/Hard Distance from Devils Kitchen campsite to Gibson Steps - 14.8km Approx time - 4hr 45min Grade - Easy/Medium Each campsite is approximately 3.5 x 3.5 metres and will fit: 1: 1 x 3 man tent 2. 2 x 1 man tent 3. 1x1 man tent & 1 x small 2 man tent.

GRADE 4

Bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks will be long, rough and steep, with some each walking. Directional signage may be limited.

Day Walking

  • Current Medical Information Form FOUND ON THE WEBSITE HERE
  • Water - up to 2 litres recommended for a full day walk
  • Sunscreen
  • Gloves and hat
  • Sufficient food bearing in mind the distance and duration of the event 
  • Suitable clothing and footwear - note denim pants are uncomfortable
  • Wet weather waterproofs, jacket and pants
  • Walking poles
  • Gaiters
  • Basic first aid kit including your specific medication eg asthma applicator
  • Torch or headlamp for contingencies
