Mt Stirling Summit loop, 15km, grade 4, snowshoe backpacking

 Distance – 15km loop

Grade – 4

Mansfield to Telephone box junction, leave cars

  • From TBJ, walk along the upper right section of the Circuit Road, turning left into Baldy Loop then right up Bluff Spur Trail to Bluff Spur Hut
  • From the Hut continue through the intersection of the trail keeping South Summit trail to your right, and West Summit Road to your left
  • At the Howqua Gap track turn left along the unsealed road past the Stirling Summit.

Optional at this point – Summit Side Trip

  • Take the short, steep walk to the 1749m summit, and return the way you came
  • At the Clear Hills track intersection turn left through the gate to GGS Hut, joining the Stirling Trail
  • Before the Cricket Pitch turn left onto Weather Station Ramble, then continue on Upper Baldy Trail past the Machinery Shed
  • At the intersection of Upper Baldy Trail and Baldy Loop, continue on Upper Baldy Trail
  • After the Practice Slope turn left at the Circuit Road intersection
  • Return to Telephone Box Junction

 Facilities - Tank, Pot Belly Heater,Toilet, Good mobile phone reception 

Be prepared with:

Overnight camp

Mandatory Gear for overnight camping- Season 3-4 tent, sleeping bag please have the correct comfort zone rating for winter conditions, mat for Alpine conditions, Food, cooking gear

Water/Food

Walkers must be self-sufficient with

food, water, first aid and camping gear,

Mandatory gear - for Alpine hiking – head light, thermal top, sun hat, beanie, gloves, map, space blanket, personal first aid, water purification tablets, whistle

The club has 3 sets of snow shoes for use, please contact event leader if you wish to use a pair.

Mobile phone (reception in some areas)
High wind days may result in falling trees.
